EXCELLENCE IN THE PROFESSIONAL ARENA

A Veteran Advocate and an Eminent International Tax Expert, Mukesh Patel enjoys over four decades of extensive experience in the legal profession, with expertise in the fields of Personal and Corporate Tax Planning, Appellate Matters, International Taxation, Tax & Investment Planning for Non-Resident Indians and Foreign Collaborations.

He is a Director on the Board of a number of reputed Public Companies, prominent among them being Zydus Cadila, Johnson Control Hitachi, Sandesh, etc. He has also served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Ahmedabad Stock Exchange.

Having extensively travelled around the Globe, he has closely studied several major tax systems. He has served as Standing Counsel of The Indo-Japanese Economic Co-operation Council, The Indo-American Chamber of Commerce and The International Forum of NRIs. He has been conferred with the Honorary Life Membership of the International Tax Bar Association.

In 1985, the International Year of Youth, he received the prestigious honour of being recognized as ‘One of the Five Outstanding Young Professionals of the World.’ In appreciation of his dedicated services to the Non-Resident Indian Community, he came to be felicitated with the ‘Friend of NRIs Award’ at the Global NRIs’ Convention at Chicago in 1997. In 2010, he received the ‘Outstanding Professional of Gujarat Award.’

His professional competence came to be acknowledged with his appointment by the Hon’ble Finance Minister in October, 2015, as an Expert on the Justice Easwar Committee for Simplification of the Income-tax Act, Rules and Procedures.

He was also appointed by the Government of India in November, 2017, as an Expert on the Six Member Official Task Force, which was entrusted the key assignment of drafting a New Income-Tax Act, in tune with best international tax practices and the economic needs of India.

COMMITMENT TO TEACHING & TAX PAYER EDUCATION

For the past over 40 years, Mukesh Patel has been passionately committed to the causes of Teaching Law and Tax Payer Education both through the Print and Electronic Media.

He has served as a Visiting Professor with Institutions of repute such as the Gujarat Law Society (GLS), Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA), Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) and Adani Institute of Management Studies (AIMS).

Starting from 1978, the tally of his popular weekly columns on Direct Taxes with leading Gujarati and English Dailies ‘Sandesh,’ ‘Gujarat Samachar,’ ‘The Times of India,’ ‘Ahmedabad Mirror’ and ‘New Indian Express’ recently crossed the 4,000 mark and has come to be acknowledged as an unprecedented record in sphere of tax journalism.

In 2000-01, he conceived and presented the first of its kind TV Serial on tax payer education entitled ‘Tax Free’ on Doordarshan and soon thereafter, the serial ‘Money Magic’ on Zee Gujarati, focusing on Tax & Investment Planning.

Since 2014, he has been presenting a regular Weekly Talk Show entitled “Tax Planning with Mukesh Patel” on CNBC Bajaar, Gujarati and participating in a Monthly Interaction on CNBC Awaaz ‘Tax Guru’ in Hindi, both of which enjoy a widely acclaimed viewership on TV and Social Media.

Mukesh has conducted or participated in over 400 Tax Payer Education Programmes on the Electronic Media. He has addressed over 800 talks on a wide range of subjects before various forums in India and abroad.

His widely acclaimed annual publication in Gujarati, ‘Practical Tax Planning & Ready Reckoner,’ has been a best seller ever since its release in 1979. ‘Save Tax’, ‘Smart Strategies for Tax Planning,’ ‘Practical Tax & Investment Planning,’ ‘Axe your Tax and Relax’ and ‘Tax Planning via Planning of Investments’ are among the popular English titles authored by him and published by India’s leading Publisher ‘Taxman’.

Mukesh was fortunate to learn the intricate art of analysing the Union Budget from the Celebrated Jurist Shri Nani Palkhiwala. Inspired by his Budget Guru since the early 1980s, he has pursued the annual Budget Yatras with a missionary zeal and his in-depth annual analysis of the Union Budget, are keenly awaited and very largely attended.

In association with the Times of India, Ahmedabad, in 2008 he initiated an innovative media campaign of ‘Budget Ho To Aisa,’ featuring the presentation of a model budget mirroring people’s aspirations, which ran successful editions for 8 years in a row. Over the years, he has been regularly conducting Pre and Post Budget Interactive Discussions and Debates on Budget Expectations and Analysis on leading TV Channels and Social Media Platforms.

INSTITUTION BUILDER & CHAMPION OF WORTHY CAUSES

As a leader of the tax profession, Mukesh has served as President of all the four leading Tax Bar Associations in Gujarat, the All Gujarat Federation of Tax Consultants (1994-95), Income Tax Bar Association (1991-92), Income Tax Appellate Tribunal Bar Association (2000-01) and the Tax Advocates Association (1984-85).

Motivated by Spirit of the Towering Legal Luminary Justice V. R. Krishna Iyer with whom he was fortunate to be closely associated, Mukesh has championed several causes for taxpayers, not just through his articles and talks, but also by pioneering landmark PILs, notable among them being the writ petitions challenging the illogical provisions of FBT and the complexities under the new tax return. His series of write-ups and talks on ‘Cracking the Code, analyzing the critical concerns of the proposed Direct Tax Code of 2009, were very widely appreciated.

During his student days, he learned valuable lessons in leadership and public life, getting opportunity to spearhead the historic Navnirman Movement of 1974, as one of its front-rank leaders. His dynamic role as the think-tank and articulate spokesperson of the Movement came to be lauded at the ‘Round Table on Student Movements of the World’ organized by the World Assembly of Youth (WAY) at Geneva in 1982, when in appreciation of his key role during the Navnirman Movement  he was awarded the WAY Fellowship. An active Boy Scout at School, he was conferred the President’s Scout Award & Medal.

Mukesh left his indelible mark as a vibrant President of the Ahmedabad Management Association (AMA) during 1995 to 1997 and the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) during the Millennium Year 1999-2000, energizing them with a dynamic vision and mission and scaling them to new heights through the execution of several innovative and meaningful projects and activities.

Crusading for the cause ‘Vision for a New Mission’ and pledging to earn recognition for Ahmedabad as ‘Management Capital of India,’ with the support of his devoted team, he was instrumental in creating for AMA a World Class Management Complex with State of the Art Facilities.

He has also served as Vice President of the All India Management Association (AIMA) and has been an active member on the National Executives of Leading Apex Chambers ASSOCHAM and FICCI.

An ardent crusader of the Voluntary Blood Donation Movement since his student days in 1970, Mukesh is a Centurion Blood Donor having himself donated blood for 151 times. In appreciation of his outstanding contribution and dedicated services for this noble humanitarian cause, he was presented the ‘British Red Cross Salutation – The Cup of Joy & Life.’

He actively served as the President of the Indian Red Cross Society, Ahmedabad from 2001 to 2012 and has also been the Founder Chairman of the Ahmedabad Red Cross Centurion Blood Donors’ Club. During this decade, the Ahmedabad Red Cross Blood Programme was fortunate to achieve the coveted status as India’s Single Largest Blood Programme and also launch notable firsts in country like ‘Sherdil,’ the unique mascot of the Blood Programme and the motivational ‘Raktadan Geet.’

He is very actively involved as President of the Dehgam Taluka Education Society, a sprawling rural education campus, which has earned both name and goodwill for its several laudable initiatives.

In October 2014, Mukesh came to be nominated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Gujarat Smt. Anandiben Patel as one of the nine Brand Ambassadors of Gujarat for the Prime Minister’s ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan.’

In May 2020, he was appointed by the Government of Gujarat as an Expert on the Six Member Committee chaired by former Finance Secretary Dr. Hasmukh Adhia for submitting recommendations for the Economic Revival of  Gujarat post the Pandemic of Covid-19.

FIVE DECADES OF BONDING WITH JAPAN

Closely associated with Japan since his student days, he founded the Indo-Japan Friendship Association, Gujarat in 1975 and is currently its President. He is also the Founder and Coordinator of the unique and first of its kind ‘Japan Information and Study Centre’ set up at the Ahmedabad Management Association in January, 2015.

As proclaimed by the Government of Japan in their Spring Imperial Decoration in 2017, he was awarded the Highest Honour and Decoration from the Emperor of Japan, ‘The Order of the Rising Sun – Gold Rays with Rosette,’ in recognition of his outstanding contribution for close to five decades for promoting friendly relations and mutual understanding between Japan and India on academic, business and cultural fronts.

In 2019, he was also felicitated with the ‘Hyogo Prefectural Award for International Cooperation’ for playing a key role in the bonding of Sister State Relations between Gujarat and Hyogo.

MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER & WRITER, GLOBE TROTTER & PHOTOGRAPHER

An Eloquent Motivational Speaker, Mukesh was awarded the ‘Hall of Fame Acclaim of the World Academy of Speakers’ in USA in 1984 and the ‘Outstanding Speaker of the 20th Century Award’ in UK in 2001, in recognition of his noteworthy achievements in the field of Public Speaking. He has also supported the setting up of ‘Mukesh M. Patel – AMA Academy for Public Speaking and Personality Development’ at the Ahmedabad Management Association.

Inspirational Reading and Creative Photography have been his spirited pursuits for years, which have bloomed and prospered during his extensive travel to over 90 countries across all the Six Continents around the World.  Founder of ‘Inspirations Unlimited,’ his Motivational Books and Photo Calendars ‘Inspirational Gems to Empower your Life,’ ‘Jeevan Prerak Chintan Ratno,’ ‘Inspirations for Public Speaking,’ ‘Enchanting Photo Classics’ and ‘Eternal Inspirations’ have been widely acclaimed.

The Exhibitions of his Photographs entitled ‘Around the World through a Lens Eye,’ and ‘Colourful Japan – Cherry Blossoms & Fall Colours’ received extensive appreciation.

His all round contributions in diverse spheres of public life came to be featured in the biographic publication ‘Trail Blazers of Gujarat’ released in 2008, by the then Chief Minister of Gujarat, Hon’ble Shri Narendra Modi.
